MY FRIEND
Ah my friend where are you now when there is so much to discuss, so much to ponder over? You left just as the world was changing, just as youth started to slip away leaving a gap that longed to be filled. Did you see yourself in eternity's grasp when we walked in the sunshine on that ancient island? I have that picture still and I have another that shows to perfection your classic pose, as thinker, martyr and friend. The Gods accepted you without question, perhaps they were in need of new concepts.I miss the knock upon my door in the dead of night or on those wasted afternoons when time longed for your inventions. I miss your doleful look of mankind's saviour, a look thatsuccessfully hid your sense of fun. I miss our sharp encounters.I tried to convince you that life was nothing more than a progression of circumstances and I am glad to say you rejected such views with a wave of the hand. At times we lived in a world without reason, your memory throwing up incidents from long ago but your memories drove me to distraction for they were without purpose. Your pain became a new logic and our search a search for madness. You took that leap from life to death but I could not follow. I was waiting for the music to stop. I was afraid.I wanted you to wait, for I had seen the repetition of mans ego. I wanted you to see that all things come around, that pain is but a realisation that the nights can be long and despair is only music by other means. But you were eager for the pain to end and my words, as well as my hands, were never enough to hold your soul. The music that you played reached far beyond the simple. I hear it in the quiet times just before the mornings light. I hear it in the memories of your hands upon the keyboard. I hear it in the plucking of a single string. If lay bare my weakness before the night time or invoke the Gods of madness to account for my tears, could I not shame you into returning? Could we not, for just one night, drink our drinks, shout our dreams, turn the heads of those who never did understand? You are gone, my friend but your face reflects in every rain washed cobble stone. Your heart is captured in the autumn mist and your dreams are safe within me. Every day I make steady progress towards that unknown eternity that has become your world. I am taking the long way round but we will walk and talk again in that world, we will laugh at our inconstancies and brush away the pain. I miss you.
