Martin Smith is a peace activist who has worked against nuclear weapons and power from the late 70's to the present. He was raised in northern Ohio, and received training in writing, drawing and painting at Ohio University.
He has presented his poetry in self published chap books and created a volume of painted poems, which is designed to convey tacit messages with Bliss symbols, cultural symbols, and compound designs. He has said the work is meant to express universal forms across language barriers, and to promote a sense of equity. Until 2010 his practiced focused on, short verse poetry and painting .
In 2011 he began writing experimental essays with no spaces, no upper case, and few vowels. His essays and critiques accept the influence of electronic messaging which has altered the "literate" use of language in preference of imojis and abbreviated forms such as, "lol, lmao, bff", etc..
