The Saddest Dream
My last and youngest niece got married today in Sri Lanka. Although I'm very happy for her and wish her happiness and many blessings, I'm a bit sad that I never got married; hence I wrote this poem.
I never wore a long white dressGlided to church like a PenCarried white roses and Lily of the Valley with ribbonsMother of pearls with a mist of blue round my neckNylon netting trailing behind me down the aisleThey were just a dream. I don’t miss the gold band, never liked wearing ringsI don’t like mingling amongst crowds of peopleReceptions parties were never my thingDancing with all that bin lining everyone staring at meThrowing a beautiful bouquet I would rather keepThey are a waste of money. I must say I love kids as long as they are well behavedBut carrying one inside me for nine months scares me to deathNever understood there was no easy way to give birthGirls in pretty dresses and ribbons on their hairWhile boys have mud baths the minute you turned aroundThey were just a dream. Now that I’m old and grey with no one to call my ownNever gave life to another human beingMissed the chance of playing with toys againNo one to help me around when I’m feeling illSeeing my offspring being decent human beingsThat is the saddest dream.
