One Five Nine

I used to travel in the 159 bus in my late teens and early 20's to work in the Civil Service. This was my first job. I loved the bus journey and I knew every famous building the bus went passed. It used to take about an hour from Streatham to St James's Square. I sometimes used to read the news paper; the days when we didn't have mobile phones nor the internet. I saved enough money from working and entered University to do a degree.

Up the road I walk to get the 159.I can see the bus at a distance.Hold on tight, I go upstairs.I get on the bus at Streatham High Street. My daily route to work in St James’s Square. In my favourite bus, I have a jolly good ride. We pass Brixton station and Lambeth Town Hall. The traffic is busy from Kennington Park. The huge building ahead is St Thomas’ Hospital. We reach Parliament Square with gothic architecture.Designed 19th-century by architect Sir Charles Barry. The Westminster Palace looks stunning and impressive. The Big Ben strikes 9 that tells me I’m late to work.We reach Horse Guards Parade-Where Trooping the Colour takes place. At Trafalgar Square with Nelson’s Column reaching sky high.Pigeons flying around and tourists feeding them seeds.Guarded by Four lions are imposing and dignified. I finally arrive at my destination St James’s Square.I cross the busy Regents Street to the seven story building I work. The 159 carries on to famous Piccadilly Circus. Its final destination is the well-known Oxford Circus. One of Europe’s busiest shopping streets,Where latest fashions are on rails. I like the old buses with a footboard and conductor-With his ticket machine round his neck. When these buses are old, they get sent to Sri Lanka. My daily journey to school and back in the old Ceylon-Were made in the red double decker bus.But nothing can beat my journey in the famous 159.
