My Grandma's Attic
Parts of this poem are made up; written from memory on pictures I’ve seen on various sites. But some parts of the poem are true of my grandparents and items I used to remember from their home. I still remember the blue wooden trunk with the gold key my granddad passed on to us.
I love my grandma’s house. It’s filled with lots of treasure. The lace draped windows and flowered wallpaper,Have a distinct welcome sight. There are old family pictures that hang on the wall. They tell tales of family members who are now gone.Granddad’s sailing ships and grandma’s fragile china dolls,Are displayed as centre piece. In grandma’s bedroom, her old laced white dressesStill hang in her white cupboard in pristine condition. The old oil lamp sits on her bedside table,Although she doesn’t use it anymore. There’s a narrow staircase going up to the attic. This is not used much anymore. When you go up to the attic you get a feeling of wonder 'n admirationHow neatly things are kept. Some things are covered in dust sheets. You take off the sheets, you see what a treasure cove it is.There’s a box filled with old board games, that my mother used to play.Another box of old clothes and shoes my grandma used as a young girl. In one corner of the attic, there’s a hard wooden bed,And a rocking chair on which my granddad fell asleep.Beside it is a big wooden blue trunk,Covered in dust with a little gold key. Inside the trunk are more personal stuffLike old letters that I did not read.I asked my grandma if they were love letters. She said yes to some, but also letters from family and friends. There are lots of old brown and white pictures of people I didn’t know. Some old books my grandad read sitting on his rocking chair. Some Christening and First Communion books. Some candles with cords and ribbons. There’s an old wireless which sits on the windowsill. The wireless that gave all war time news.My grandma said she used it moreTo listen to stories being read. I came down the narrow stairs and went out to the garden. It was a bright sunny day with a gentle breeze. My grandma said some lovely old stories.I listened to them while having cream tea.
