To Become Immortalised
If I were a statue What sort would I be?What fame or acclaimWould spark my legacy? What sculpture or artist Would carve out my frame? How deserving would I beTo be more than a name? A figure implanted In a square or a placeTo become immortalised In body and face To be moulded or meltedOr carved out of rockWhat act of attractionWould I need to unlock? Are we wrong to aspireTo be immortalised?Turned into a statueAnd then be idolised? A plaque with a name A date underneathOn memorial daysMarked by a wreath Icons and idols Philanthropists tooHow much does one give Before their souls are bought too? What incentive is this To be remembered this way?To stand still and be silentThroughout night and day? Tower in the blacknessAnd the bleakness of nightReflecting the glare Of unatural light Glowing in citiesAcross the world's landAre statues of men With weapons in hand Ocassionally women Draped in a gownOne hand on a shoulderWhere the gown had come down Naked are men Wearing naught but a clothHanging so looselyIt almost falls off And where there is nothingPrecision is placedAnd where once it would hangIt gets lost or misplaced Shoulders like bouldersChiseled and strongNose of a soldier Roman and long Legs of a warriorRising up to the cheeksWhere up through the spineHis true status speaks Yet now all we haveAre the fat men of the hourWho lack what it takesTo win or wield power When today's men become statuesThey won't glow or shineFor nothing in this life Is so great or divine And so statues of menMake me so scepticalAre these men that we honourOr just mere spectacle? If you were a statue What sort would you be?What fame or acclaimWould spark your legacy?
