The Unseen
The roots of this poem were inspired by a number of things I've been thinking about, reading, watching, and listening to in quite a lot of depth recently.
I was prompted to complete this poem this morning, on the second day of the Olympic Games in Paris, 2024, as I watched athletes from around the world attempting to surpass or break previous records of human accomplishment and achievement.
What would we do If our dreams all came true?Would our lives feel fulfilled? The fulfilled are so few Would we wish for a challengeTo compensate for possession?Would to be poor or have lessBecome our obsession? What happens when weHave all that we need? Are we wired to want moreProgrammed for greed? Once one dream is reached Our ambitions fulfilledA new dream is bornOur old passions killed And so it goes on Eternally driven To strive for the thingsOut of reach and not givenNot easily wonWithout trouble or strifeSuch is our design In this thing we call life Perhaps we should aimTo not want, but to beIs the secret to good livingTo not strive constantly? Or does our quest to achieveMake us feel more alive? Is the search to want moreHow us beings survive? Do the goals we pursueHelp our souls to pass on The progress we makeWhen our bodies are gone?To the next generationWho have things to resolveIs this why our species Continues to evolve? Where is the end point Of this eternal machine?I'd like to be thereTo see the unseen
