Still Surface

A reflection on the year now gone, an aspiration for the year ahead

Last year you took the easy wayYou coasted week by weekRoutines and habits filled your dayIt was simplicity that you'd seek An ocean without tidal wavesPlain sailing everyday A floating branch which driftedBut not too far away Every morning early starts Each night an early endAll split up in even partsSo that each day became a friend  No lumps or bumps or obstacles No challenges or risksNo rocks to tip the apple cart Satisfied to just exist  A stillness in your progress A never-ending calmTime filled up with straight lines No danger or alarm  A pause for breath and certaintyStill surface to reflect Each day in equilibrium No disorder or defect  Nothing to tear your world apart No doubt or death or dramaJust ordered continuity Without any need for armour This year you want to live a bitYou want to feel the ocean’s waveYou want to be adventurous Not just be your routine's slave With eyes wide, engaged and living Beyond monotonyYou want your days rememberedToo soon the years forgotten me It is good to take a breatherTo recharge and to unwindBut life is for the livingAnd now your life's aligned You want to taste the nectarYou'd like to stand out in a stormYou want to feel the thunderSomething outside of the norm Retain some sense of discipline Keep an order in your dayBecome the person you might envyHave something interesting to say Become someone you strive to beBe that boat you once untiedAnd suddenly your floating freeThought and action unified Capsized by the coming stormSwimming hard against the waveYour alive and finally kickingA life you have to fight to save
