The deepest cut
Stood at the cusp of a revolution Water and tunnels a transport solution Opened the ways from inland to the sea A free flow of commerce for all to see Canal system worked by a series of locks A lift or staircases the boats would be blocked By high wooden gates with a sluice in the side Moving the water across the divide Boats would change level then on they could floatHorse drawn to start with then fuelled by coal But the engines moved slowly so not a surprise The boats lack of speed became its demise Over the years rail and road intervened A fast pace of life onto which we were weanedSo now it's all fishing and the odd pleasure cruise Or for narrow boat owners to live on and use The wildlife made the canalside their homesA wonderful place to peacefully roam Easily trekking for hours in day Or paddling their lengths in an old fashioned way The canals and rivers of england provide A haven for wildlife to live and to thrive But remember this story plainly put The 'navvies''dug out this deepest cut For those who dont know cut is black country slang for canal An original workCopyright 17062020
