An Emptied Soul (a celebration of a championed love)

She is his trouble and strife, Once devoted wife, The love of his life.  Now, at this later lifeWhere love still sits, Sits a life of two halves.  The want to protect her, The weight of her dignityHeld high above his head on quivering arms. A want for his presence to be felt by all, His flag of unity speared aside her bed.  She is claimed and still vital.  Yet, lies a need for self care. An unwelcome intermissionFrom his quest to stop her vanishing, Blending in with the other horizontal frames, Ashen and forgotten. His rested breath to save a breath, Or the want will lay wanting.  This blind spiritLooks beyond the decayOf mind and body. A pitied cadaver to outside eyes, But he sees only her, The inner soul, the inner light.  Her.  To her, he is now unseen, As meaningless as her surroundings. Her memories swept away by the back of a hand, A pencilled page wiped cleanBy an inevitable, cruel rubber.  His only prizeIs to keep his eyes. A recognition of her until the very end.  Her.  It has to be enough.  That's the deal, He's real. This binding of loveIs a pact. Beyond any other act.
