- Weir Mills in woodland clearing flowers like bright conjured spells appeared each one a star to turn the round of seasons pale fingers of snowdrops glazed by white-hoared dawns yellow petalled primrose were pale shining watery suns amid blue-green grass glorified by silent bells of lily of the valley and delicate orchids in whispering drifts Spring smiled with the unwinking blue of a thousand irish eyes of bluebells but beyond this bright rimmed crater in deep shadow, the mill pool to my child’s eyes held unfathomed terrors above the turbulence of the mill wheel lay the stilled black waters unbroken by joyful summer dives that far off year of our lord in nineteen fifty five Cecelia Cran
