Wooden Spoon

For a dear friend who passed from us in September 2001, and how we remember him from this item that he made for us.

If you knew him you'd know what I'm saying. There's so much memory in an empty chair.Sometimes life creeps up without you knowing,Sometimes it hits you from behind,But if I sailed ten thousand oceans,A truer friend would be hard to find. A wooden spoon lies on the table,Finely carved with a pocket knife.Sanded down as smooth as water.Still smiling as he adds the final touch,I'm sat there laughing right beside him.Funny how the small things mean so much. A dog barks somewhere in the distance,A whistle carries on the wind.A moment's madness sends me reeling,A sudden glimpse that leads me to believe,It's not some stranger that I'm really seeing. So quaint the patterns memory can weave. He's on some highway out there somewhere,Racing down a wide and empty road.Riding out beyond some long tomorrow,He's got forever to reach the Moon.Wherever he may find some new horizon,His life to me is carved in a wooden spoon.
